Australia’s Food Supply – Safe and Nutritious

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

Internationalisation encompasses curricula enriched with international elements and standards, and one of International Development Office (IDO)’s roles is to facilitate disciplines to achieve this objective, through its connections with overseas government bodies and institutions.

Australia’s food safety standard is renowned as one of the world’s best.  Its approach is to ensure the on-going safety and nutritional adequacy of the food supply, across the highly integrated levels of government and different government agencies that have food related responsibilities.  Its food regulatory system utilises a through chain, outcome based approach that requires food safety hazards to be identified and addressed throughout the supply chain.  In setting requirements for food safety and nutritional adequacy, Australia adopts an evidence and risk based approach that is consistent with the approaches of the international standard setting body, the Codex Alimentarius, and its associated expert advisory committees.

At the talk, Dr Marion HEALY will outline Australia’s approach on managing the food supply and illustrate the approach with several case studies.  Audience will be able to acquire in-depth knowledge on food safety and the potential new food safety challenges, such as the application of nanotechnology, and devise curricula to benchmark with international standards where appropriate.
