[ News ]  Zürich meets Hong Kong – “Skills for Success” Seminar - 2017-10-25
Jointly organised by VTC, Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Location Promotion Winterthur Region, Switzerland, the seminar “Skills for Success – Practice- and Labour Market-Oriented Education as a Key to Economic Success” was successfully held on 25 October 2017.  The seminar, sharing best practices of apprenticeships in the Swiss and Hong Kong VPET systems, attracted a full house of industry professionals and vocational education practitioners.
 
The delegation from Winterthur and Zürich, led by Ms Carmen Walker Spaeh, Member of the Government Council of the Canton of Zürich, and Winterthur Mayor Mr Michael Kuenzle, were welcomed by Mr Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Education in Hong Kong.  
 
The seminar shared that over two third of the young people in Switzerland enrol in vocational education and training (VET), which provides a solid foundation for them to develop in an occupation from commercial, social care to engineering and IT.  During the panel discussion session, almost all panellists shared that they had started as an apprentice or had gone through a dual-track mode of studies, either in Hong Kong or Switzerland.  Now becomes successful company director, Mr Kevin O’Brien, Executive Director of Gammon Construction Limited Hong Kong valued the apprenticeship that contributed to his career success.
 
The seminar formed part of “Zürich meets Hong Kong: A Festival of Two Cities”, which took place from 21 to 29 Oct 2017, presenting Zürich as a vibrant and attractive global city to the citizens of Hong Kong.  Over 20 events, including seminars, conferences, workshops, films and performances, held at different venues across Hong Kong, highlighted the various facets of Zürich in the fields of arts & culture, business & commerce, tourism & lifestyle as well as in science, education & innovation.
